20th ANNUAL MIP JUNIOR

Reed Midem has announced that this year’s MIP Junior, taking place in Cannes, October 6-7, will feature a keynote address by Stuart Snyder, President and COO of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media division. Known as the driving force behind Turner Broadcasting's Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim, and celebrating Cartoon Network's 20th Birthday, Snyder will speak at MIPJunior (also celebrating its 20th birthday) on the state of the kids business today and moving forward. He will also feature examples from the network's experiences and evolution over the past 20 years.

ZODIAK/ASAHI CO-PRO DEAL

Zodiak Rights (part of Zodiak Media) has entered into a co-development deal with one of Japan’s largest broadcasters, Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, to create new formats for international distribution. This marks Zodiak Rights’ first co-development deal in Japan. As part of this deal, Zodiak Rights and its internal Creativity and Innovation Unit will join forces with Asahi to co-create, co-develop and co-produce unscripted new entertainment formats. Successful formats will go to pilot for premiere on Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, followed by international versions. Zodiak Rights will retain the international distribution rights to the formats created under this agreement.

SPORTEL RETURNS TO RIO

SPORTEL has announced that it will return to Rio de Janeiro for the second annual SPORTELRio, which will be held March 11-13, 2013, at the Sofitel Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The inaugural SPORTELRio, held earlier this year played host to nearly 600 registered attendees from the international sports content and new media industries. SPORTEL intends to build on the success of SPORTELRio 2012, and has answered to the demands of its participants who chose Rio as the destination of choice for the 2013 spring market.

SPY STORY

Sundance Channel and SevenOne International will co-produce a television adaptation of the international bestselling spy novel "Restless" by William Boyd. Starring Hayley Atwell, Rufus Sewell, Michelle Dockery, Charlotte Rampling and Michael Gambon, the two-part mini-series starts shooting this summer in South Africa and the UK, for broadcast on BBC 1 in the UK and on Sundance Channel in the US late 2012. Set against the background of the British Secret Service operations in the USA during World War II, mini-series tells the gripping story of Eva Delectorskaya, a young Russian recruited as a spy to infiltrate the corridors of power and swinging public opinion toward the US joining the allied war effort (2 x 90’).

PRIMETIME ANIMATION

“Crash Canyon” is an animated sitcom focusing on the Wendell family, whose family vacation turns out to be an actual disaster. After accidentally driving off a cliff, the Wendells plummet two miles straight down into a canyon, surviving to find that the exact same fate has befallen several others before them and the Wendells are now just the newest residents of a community of everyone that has driven, cycled, sky-dived or even crashed their NASA landing capsule into the canyon. Their new neighbors include an astronaut and his chimp companion, an old lady that has domesticated a bear, a has-been British punk rocker, a man in a perpetual coma, a ventriloquist and his dummy, and many more form the impromptu, gravity-cursed community of “Crash Canyon” (26 x 30’).

“BARBARELLA” COMING TO SMALL SCREEN

Gaumont International Television is teaming with Nicolas Refn and Martha De Laurentiis to bring the iconic character Barbarella to the small screen. The series will be based on the character originally created as a graphic novel by Jean-Claude Forest and made famous in the 1968 film of the same name. Nicolas Refn will direct and executive produce the series alongside Martha De Laurentiis. Co-Executive Producers are Julien Forest and Jean-Marc Lofficier; further details are pending.

Designed to show viewers ages four to seven how objects they encounter every day are made, “Making Stuff” follows the adventures of Gears, an animated host made out of spare parts from the factory floor. His animated pal, Wiz, uses x-ray vision to help children understand the inner workings of the machines they meet. Series is shot in high-definition in real factories, food plants and wherever items such as gelato, chocolate, teddy bears, kayaks, jigsaw puzzles and model trains are made (52 x 5’).

Produced by Firecracker Films, “Married to the Moonies is a one-hour documentary offering unprecedented access to the little known world of the Unification Church, known to outsiders as “the Moonies,” referring to the church’s founder, Rev. Sung Myung Moon. Program follows three British youngsters as they travel to Korea to be blessed by Rev. Moon, at one of the movement's controversial mass weddings. The three undertake a condensed courtship, meeting and making plans for the future with a person they hardly know (60’).
